The Process
6 Steps To Final Draft
Successful college essay writing in six steps. Experts have called the college essay “high stakes competitive writing”. It is. And that is why we will follow a plan.
Interview and essay topic discussion
I'll start with an in depth interview of your son or daughter. Together, we will uncover passions, interests and philosophy.
The interview is an introspective activity that helps each student uncover and identify things about themselves to enhance his or her college application. Once I truly get to know who each student is, we can zero in on a suitable essay topic.
Visualization and outline of essay
In television journalism, you must capture the attention of the viewer immediately. High school seniors writing college application essays have a similar challenge with admissions decision makers.
So before the writing starts, we picture the finished essay and outline it: the opening that makes the best first impression, the story, and what it says about the student.
Coaching and writing
Your student writes the essay, in his or her own words, and I coach along the way. The aim is an essay that draws on the student's unique talent and ability and shows individuality through writing.
Review and recommendations
I review the draft and make recommendations, asking the right questions so the message your student wants to convey comes through clearly.
Edit first draft
We edit the first draft together, keeping the writing succinct and compelling while it stays true to the student's voice.
Edit final draft for submission
A final edit gets the essay ready for submission: an essay that will set your student apart from other candidates and get them through the admission door!
Sessions will be imaginative, creative, thoughtful and entertaining – all possible in 6 steps to the Final Draft.
Interview and video presentation prep
If needed, I will provide additional services to help prepare an applicant for an interview or video presentation.
A student on the process
I wasn't sure if my essay was strong enough or if I conveyed the message I wanted. Ms. Pileggi asked the right questions and guided me to a second and final draft of my essay. I was really happy when I was accepted to my top school.
